I had a nice visit to LACMA yesterday afternoon and was really blown away by the wood block prints of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Considered the last great master of Ukiyo-e, Yoshitoshi’s prints are colorful, vibrant and packed with detail. The exhibition Yoshitoshi’s Demons contrasts an early set of prints the One Hundred Ghost Tales of China and Japan, of 1865, and one of his last print sets, the New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts, begun in 1889. These photos are some details from the prints but the whole collection can be seen on LACMA Collections Online but I’d highly recommend going to see them yourself, you have until November 3rd. That way you can have a look at the rest of the museum’s massive collection. The current Heroes and Villains: The Battle for Good in India’s Comics exhibition was great as well, it runs until February 7th 2010.
